The song was written and originally recorded by Bob Dylan but his performance at the time was deemed unfit for the radio. It is the version recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, however, (like Dylan, managed by Albert Grossman) that charted at number 1 in Billboard’s Adult Contemporary for 5 weeks straight in August 1963 and peaked at number 2 in the pop chart—making Dylan thousands in royalties.
